Duplicates album not showing on iPhone? Here's why

The Duplicates album only appears after the Photos app has indexed your library and found duplicates. On iOS 26 and 27, look in Photos, then Collections, then Utilities. If Duplicates isn't there, your iPhone either hasn't found any duplicates or is still indexing your library. Apple says duplicate detection requires your iPhone to be locked and connected to power, and can take up to a few days.

Where is the Duplicates album on iOS 26 and 27?

Open the Photos app.
Tap Collections.
Tap Utilities, then tap Duplicates.
To merge a set, tap Merge, then tap Merge [number] Items.

For earlier iOS versions:

iOS 18: open Photos, tap Utilities, then tap Duplicates.
iOS 17: tap Albums, then tap Duplicates below Utilities.
iOS 15 or earlier: there is no Duplicates album. Apple added it in iOS 16.

Why isn't the Duplicates album showing?

Photos hasn't found any duplicates. Apple says that if you don't see the Duplicates album, your iPhone has not identified any duplicates. The album doesn't appear until Photos identifies duplicates.
Photos is still indexing your library. Detection requires your iPhone to be locked and connected to power. Apple says it could happen quickly or take up to a few days, depending on your library size and other background tasks (Apple Support).
Can't find Utilities at all (iOS 18)? On iOS 18 you can hide collections. Scroll to the bottom of the Photos app, tap Customize & Reorder, and check that Utilities is selected. Tap Reset to undo all your changes (Apple Support).
Utilities isn't where you expect (iOS 26)? Collections can be reordered. Tap Collections, scroll to the bottom and tap Reorder to see where Utilities is (Apple Support).
Using an iCloud Shared Photo Library? Collections can include your Personal Library, the Shared Library or both. Choosing Both Libraries means you're looking at all of your photos.
Your iPhone runs iOS 15 or earlier. The album doesn't exist before iOS 16.

How do I check if Photos is still indexing?

Open the Photos app and tap Library.
Scroll to the bottom. If your iPhone is indexing your library, a status message appears there.
If you see one, lock your iPhone, leave it on a charger and check back later. Apple says this can take up to a few days.

What if it still doesn't appear?

If there's no status message and the album still isn't there, Photos hasn't found any duplicates in your library. That doesn't mean there's nothing to clean up. Apple describes the album as finding duplicate photos and videos and doesn't publish its matching rules. The album is about copies, so it isn't built for picking the best of several similar retakes, or for finding blurry shots and photos where someone blinked.

Burst photos: tap the Burst thumbnail, tap Burst ([number]), select the frames you want to keep, then tap Done. This is free in the Photos app (Apple Support).
